Up for your consideration is my Wm. S. Haynes solid silver flute, handmade in the Haynes' Boston workshop. As was written to me in 2003, " The flute serial # 5871 was sold on July 16, 1920 to Pacific Music Co. It is a Solid Silver Flute with a C-footjoint, low pitch, closed G#. The replacement value for the Insurance is $5,600. Best regards, Stella Fuggetta, President, Wm. S. Haynes Co. Inc." The flute has American style "Y" key cup arms with drawn tone holes. Cosmetically, the instrument is in very fine condition with only very slight imperfections. The original case is somewhat scuffed, has tape on the back edge but functions. The cleaning rod is long gone. Although I have not had a recent overhaul, all pads cover well and the action is very nice and smooth. The flute has a beautiful voice and can produce a tone with a nice edge. This closed hole hand built model was made during the era in which the Haynes company earned its well deserved reputation. This is a fantastic example of American craftsmanship at its best. The flute has been in my family for 70 years and never on the market. It came to me through my stepfather, clarinetist for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during the 40's and 50's.
